The essence of Düsseldorf
Welcome to Andreas Quartier
Andreas Quartier is more than just an address or a collection of buildings. With Andreas Quartier, a social centre has been created once again in the historic city of Düsseldorf. A vibrant district that does justice to the significance of this location. A place that has always been important for Düsseldorf and that will take on a new radiance with Andreas Quartier.
The philosophy
A place with a unique personality
The Andreas Quartier combines apparent contradictions to create a contrasting experience. Here, listed architecture and the most modern facilities, entertainment and culture, sophistication and local colour, big city life and nature, inspiration and contemplation, sound and silence form the facets of a fascinating art of living.
Social meeting place
Space for human encounters
Where cosmopolitans, international guests and the city's society come together, there is always something going on. Because what moves people the most are other people. With this open atmosphere of encounter, the Andreas Quartier creates precious and unique moments that people will remember fondly.
Culture and entertainment
Discover and enjoy at the highest level
Music, art and culinary delights at the highest level accompany residents and guests in the Andreas Quartier through the day. They are an integral part of the overall concept and a style-defining part of the extravagant and elegant culture of the district. In this way, the Andreas Quartier reinterprets a tradition that was once created by Duke Jan Wellem.
Historical heritage
A unique, living monument
Behind the historical façade of the former Palace of Justice, a life beckons that can only be inadequately described as luxurious. Because, in keeping with the high-quality architecture, the residents here are surrounded by a combination of facilities, amenities and services that leave nothing to be desired. Here you don't live, you reside. Just as the Elector intended.
Neighbourhood with a city-defining character
Where Düsseldorf shines
The Andreas Quartier is located in the historic Andreasviertel, in the heart of Düsseldorf. This central location allows residents to experience everything the city has to offer, either right in the neighbourhood or in the immediate vicinity – from first-class restaurants and boutiques to cultural highlights. At the same time, it offers hidden retreats of tranquillity as the perfect counterbalance to urban life.
Central location with unique flair
In the middle of the city's history
With every step you take outside the gates of the Andreas Quartier, you are treading on historic ground. Magnificent churches and no less spectacular secular buildings tell of the rich history of the former royal residence and present-day state capital. And even for long-established Düsseldorf residents, there is always something new to discover around the Andreas Quartier.
Gardens and parks
Urban charm and green oases
Despite its central location, the Andreas Quartier itself and the surrounding neighbourhood offer quiet, green retreats. The proximity to the Rhine and numerous parks allows residents to combine urban life with relaxing moments in nature.
Transport connections
Faster arrival
Thanks to its excellent transport links, the Andreas Quartier can be reached surprisingly quickly by both public transport and car. Whether it's the airport, the main train station or the motorway – all major transport hubs can be reached in no time. This is ideal for people who travel a lot for business or pleasure and want to spend as much time as possible at home.
On historic ground
Deeply rooted in history
The area where the Andreas Quartier is located today has always been closely interwoven with the history of the city of Düsseldorf. Its historical origins even predate the city's founding. This is testament to the unbroken appeal and quality of this special location for over 1,500 years. The past can still be traced, discovered and experienced today through outstanding and hidden architectural traces from different eras, but also through the revival of traditions in a contemporary setting.
The city of the dukes and electors
The splendour and heyday of the Baroque
In the Baroque era, Düsseldorf's social and cultural life experienced an initial heyday that continues to this day. During this period, the rulers also became interested in the site that was later to become the Andreas Quartier. William the Rich had the ducal stables and riding school built here. The Komödie was also built during his reign. In turn, Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate had it converted into Düsseldorf's first opera house. The Cölestinerinnen-Kloster (Cölestinerinnen monastery) on Ratinger Straße was also built under his aegis. It was severely damaged by an artillery bombardment in 1794. Converted into the Spinrath Palace, it marks the transition from baroque to early classicism. Its listed façade is now part of the Andreas Quartier.
Governor's Residence and Provincial Parliament
Metamorphoses of Power
In 1766, under the rule of Elector Carl Theodor, a governor's palace was built on Mühlenstraße, where the impressive portal of the Andreas Quartier is located today. Initially, it served as a representative administrative centre and residence for its governor, Count Johann Ludwig von Goltstein. He was followed by Duke Wilhelm of Bavaria, the French Grand Duke Joachim Murat and finally the Prussian district president. Later, the provincial parliament of the Rhine province met here. From 1911, the early classical building was demolished to make way for the district and local court. However, the central main portal was preserved. It was moved to an inner courtyard, where it can still be seen today.
Palace of Justice and architectural gem
Back to the roots
After a long construction period – interrupted by the First World War – the district and regional court opened its doors in 1923. It is no coincidence that the neo-baroque Wilhelmine-style building, with its façade structure, allegorical sculptures and dimensions, is reminiscent of a monumental baroque palace and more than lives up to the name Palace of Justice. Spectacular trials have been held here that have made criminal and legal history. The court closed its doors at the beginning of 2010. After seven years of careful planning and extensive renovation and refurbishment work, it has reopened as a prestigious part of the Andreas Quartier.
